Before you start

Site Visit – one of our estimator will come view the foundation of you home to ensure all window regulations are followed and to help answer any questions. 

Permit – A permit will be required prior to starting the project through the town or municipality the home resides in. 

Pre-Purchased Windows – We supply a wide variety of windows. However, if you pre-purchase your own windows, you may need the actual window installation to be done by your supplier. This will be determined at the time the quote is done.

1 year warranty on windows. This covers leaking under normal weather conditions.

CanWest is fully insured, a long standing member of the BBB and COR Safety qualified, with an A+ rating with WCB

Payment

Immediately upon completion by Visa, Mastercard or Cheques

A 30% deposit is required for specialty work/windows.

Why do you need a permit to install basement windows?

Calgary has strict laws in place that requires homeowners to get permits for specific home renovations. Egress windows and any renovation that involves cutting into the foundation of your home, or could potential effect fire/building codes, will require a permit.

All measurements provided for the permit/work being completed will need to follow the Alberta Building Code.

 

Obtaining a permit

As the homeowner, you can pull the permit yourself, or for an additional administrative fee, plus the cost of the permit,  CanWest can pull the permit on the homeowners behalf as the contractor. We are an approved company in many cities, towns, municipalities and complete work all across Alberta. 

For CanWest to pull a permit on your behalf, our team will require a:

  • Site plan
  • Basement floor plan
  • Elevation drawings
  • and the homeowners written consent that we have permission to pull a permit.

Permit can take several days to be issued from the city. Once the permit has been obtained, and the work completed, you will need to call the number provided with the permit to have an inspector view the work completed.

What you need to know about Egress in Alberta

  • A city or Municipality permit is required prior to proceeding 
  • Size of the window must have a minimum area of 3.77 sq/ft and a minimum dimension of 380mm
  • dimension width or height cannot be less than 15″
  • Window wells must be a minimum of 30″ protruding from the foundation wall
  • Wells will have to be a minimum of 2″ above finish grade and no more than 6″
  • If a sprinkler system is present, Egress windows do not apply
  • If located under a cantilever, the cantilever cannot be more than 25.5″ 
  • There must be a clearance of 2.1 meters if the egress window is to be installed under a deck.
